World of Tanks multiplayer online action game

I received the beta testing version on Aug 20th 2010 and as the title points out, WOT is an online multiplayer tank game.

Let’s take a look at the game itself, from a performance point of view.

The minimum system requirements are as follows, CPU: 2 GHz, 1 GB of ram,

video GeForce 6600GT (128 MB) / ATI analog, HDD 2 GB, connection rate 128 Kbps.

As this is about all I have in my 2 year old machine WOT works perfect and the graphics look great.

The game itself, starts you out in an MS-1 or a Leichttraktor tank depending on what side you choose, Russian or German. They are both light tanks with front armor ranging from 14 to 18 inches. The gun supplied for the MS-1 is a 37mm Hotchkiss and the Leichttraktor comes with a 3.7 cm KwK36. Both guns are not very effective against medium and heavy tanks, the trick is to stay alive and gather points to purchase upgrades. Purchasing upgrades to the gun, suspension, radio, engine and crew make the tank more effective in aiming and maneuverability, I highly recommend you go this route before you purchase another medium or heavy tank.

In game there is a training room, take some time and play in there as it teaches you the game maps, you will learn great places to ambush your opponents. The in game war zone is great fun and exciting, you are let loose on the battle field with a few other team mate’s with great battles taking place as each team tries to take each other’s flag.

These are my first impressions, WOT is well done and fun to play, it is an all round action game suiting just about anyone.

WWII German or Russian armored tank first person shooter; however you can also be mobile artillery or tank destroyer. You play online as an individual, group or squad.

Story: WW II German and Russian Historic tank battles.

In game, you start out in an MS-1 or a Leichttraktor tank depending on what side you choose Russian or German. They are both light tanks with front armor ranging from 14 to 18 inches. The gun supplied for the MS-1 is a 37mm Hotchkiss and the Leichttraktor comes with a 3.7 cm KwK36. Both guns are not very effective against medium and heavy tanks, the trick is to stay alive and gather points to purchase upgrades. Purchasing upgrades to the gun, suspension, radio, engine and crew make the tank more effective in aiming and maneuverability, I highly recommend you go this route before you purchase another medium or heavy tank.

In game there is a training room, take some time and play in there as it teaches you the game maps, you will learn great places to ambush your opponents. The in game war zone is great fun and exciting, you are let loose on the battle field with a few other team mate’s with great battles taking place as each team tries to take each other’s flag.

Game play and Controls: Keyboard and mouse only.

Using the W key as forward the S key as reverse and the A, D keys for left and right puts you in motion. The mouse used for turret movement is quite adequate. The left click fire’s the main gun; the mouse scroll wheel zoom’s the view in and out. Once you are out of action, right mouse clicks gives you views from a team mate’s tank.

There is a learning curve to this game. You need to understand what your tank is capable of, reading the tanks description, range and shell penetration are crucial to your staying alive.

Let the big boys duke it out, while in your light or medium tank, scoot around spotting artillery for your artillery, upon opportunity, the chance to kill artillery or a light tank will come to be successful. Another option is to flank your team heavy tanks, once they engage; you come around behind the enemy and shoot him in the rear where his armor is not as thick, use your quicker speed and maneuverability to your advantage. Another little known fact in the game is, once you fire your gun the enemy artillery can easily find you. No matter what you do you are going to get blown up many times over, until you can purchase a heavy tank, even then survival is not guaranteed.

This in all sense will be a team game utilizing all your weapons as a unit.

Graphics and Sound: Not as good as ARMII but close.

Animation of detailed surroundings such as foliage, boulders, buildings, skies and other tanks is very even. Turret, gun elevation, gun site and tank movement all run smooth.

The sound is impressive, through a stereo head set; you can hear every element of the battle field.

Conclusion: Just plain fun to play.

World of Tanks is not as intense as combat games like ARM II. Instead it is more realistic, tactically minded, like you would find in flight Sims, such as IL-2.

A flaw in the beta version is a complete lack of a tutorial. Many of the particulars of the game take a lot of testing before you comprehend exactly how they work. The game is distressing at first as you toil to understand what your tank is capable of but I am sure all of these will be addressed in the released version.

No need to privately critique ... most all the regulars here have written reviews at on time or t'other ... and for those who think they'd like to write, this will be instructional.

First, let's see if there are any typos ...:

Story: WW II German and Russian Historic tank battles.

Let's change that to WWII.

The left-click fire's the main gun; the mouse scroll wheel zoom’s the view in and out. Once you are out of action, right mouse clicks gives you views from a team mate’s tank.

Change those to fires, zooms, and teammate's respectively.

Graphics and Sound: Not as good as ARMII but close.

It's ArmA II or even Armed Assault II ... make sure you check the proper spelling of game names. When B-17 Flying Fortress: The Mighty 8th! came out, all the reviewers were calling it B-17 II(or a dozen other variations), which it wasn't. Just basic fact checking there.

That is it for basic spelling ... now the more detailed stuff ...

I have no idea what a Leichttraktor is, or if you spelled it correctly, so I have to look it up. A quick Googling and yes, you have spelled it correctly and it is German for Light Tractor. You say "light tank" in the next sentence, but maybe you could inform your readers what Leichttraktor means with a simple aside, like this ...

Or, if you are really pedantic, like I am, you could point out that Lichttraktor means light tractor, or light tank as opposed to a Großtraktor or large tractor.

Why be so pedantic? Because part of reviewing a game is educating your readers. Terms like Lichttraktor may make sense to you, but to someone who has never played a tank sim before, it might cause some confusion and put them off reading further. When I write, I imagine my dear departed granny sitting on my shoulder questioning everything I say, "What? What's that you say? A lick tractor? Who would lick a tractor?" So, if you think your granny might stop you mid-stream, then consider providing more details. Don't go overboard with that, however, as simmers are generally pretty wise about such stuff ... use your best judgement.

Moving on ...

I then saw this ...

So, again, I have to check your facts on this ... and yep, there was a 37mm Hotchkiss gun on the Russian MS-1 (MS-1 later renamed to T-18). Did you know that MS means Malyi Soprovozhdeniya or Small Escort? Again, I found that on a website using a Google search. It's that type of little detail that turns a regular review into something a bit more special.

Now, I don't normally fact check established writers. When the late, great writer extraordinaire Jim "Twitch" Tittle wrote for us, I never had to fact check anything he wrote because I knew he got his details right---first time, every time. If you continue to write reviews, and I get to know you are taking care of such details, I won't bother checking such things.

But what about this 3.7 cm KwK36?

First off, I find out it's KwK 36, with a space. Also, KwK stands for Kampfwagenkanone or Battle Wagon Cannon ... now that, I'll admit, is far too much info, but you as the writer should know what that means. I'll point out here, too, that I used Google to find out what KwK stands for, then I had to use an online German translator to find out what "kampf" means, and now, having found out that it means battle or conflict, the title of Adie's book, Mein Kampf makes much more sense to me. See, learning is fun! ;)

Okay, where was I? Right ... the 3.7cm KwK 36. A quick Google verifies that yes, that is a gun used on the medium tanks.

That's all for fact checking. Fun. Not. :lol:

The spelling and the facts are out of the way ... <screeeeeeeeeeeeeech> but wait, the facts that were there are checked and okay, but what facts have been left out?

The first fact I don't see is, what does this game cost? Is it free? Is there a demo? Is it a one-time purchase? Is it a subscription? We need that info for a review. It's not here. You mention in your introduction that you have to stay alive to gather points to purchase upgrades. A bit more detail with that would clarify if a player can just pay real money for upgrades or if they must earn the upgrades through in-game victories.

Also, what are the publisher/developer's claims about the game? Take their sales pitch promises about realism, fun, authenticity, ease-of-use, and the like and compare that to your experience in the game ... is it true what they said? Good place to look for this info is on the box if it came in a box, next on the website, and finally in pre-release interviews or public relations news releases.

Other facts you cover are the system requirements, so that's all good ... and I won't bother fact checking that stuff 'cause you no doubt took it right off their website.

Moving on.

Spelling, fact checking, and missing facts dealt with. Let's look at the structure.

First off, while the spelling is good and the punctuation is okay (not perfect, but okay), the arrangement on the page is atrocious. Probably due to copying and pasting into the forum, so let's gussie it up a bit, shall we?

That's starting to look a little more better-er :)

I made the sections stand out and I fixed a few grammatical errors that I caught during the reformatting. I'd still have to read it over several more times, first for grammar, then again for content. Each time I re-read it I'll focus only on one thing, like grammar or content. Why? Because I've learned that I can't properly fix content and grammar at the same time, my brain simply doesn't work well that way.

Speaking of content, now that the article has some structure, we can see that my added heading of "Introduction" really isn't appropriate. The content under that heading is really gameplay information, so it should go under the "Gameplay and Controls" section. But, wait, are "Gameplay and Controls" naturally linked? Not really, so I'd make "Gameplay" its own section and "Controls" its own section, or better yet, because the controls are so basic, let's get rid of that word completely and just work the controls info into the Gameplay section.

Alright, I'm starting to bore even myself, so I'm going to end this critique/tutorial. Hopefully, rather than simply bore you with my explanations, you are seeing how review writing is a process of continual refinements.

What you have presented above is an excellent first draft that can form the basis of a more complete and informative review. With practice, the process gets faster and faster and your first drafts will be nearly finished ready-to-publish masterpieces complete with interesting side notes about the real-world weapons, the developer and publisher's past records of achievements and failures, and whether you think the game is a winner or, as we are fond of saying these days, an epic fail.

Thanks Dude well done.

I did go over and over the work to be sure spelling and grammar were correct,I see I have greatly improved.

Thank you for the words of wisdom and the time it took to explain everything.

Now the big question. Should I write another one?
