  1. Morning all. Cloudy and calm. Humid and 68F with a high of 80F. Had another 1/2 inch of rain yesterday morning. More expected today. Flash flood watches have been issued around the state for various counties, as some have had heavy rains in the past few days. Some flooding in and around the state capital, the city of Des Moines, and in south east Iowa has been reported.

This past Friday marked the 2nd anniversary of the big flood of 2008 in Cedar Rapids. They are finally tearing down more houses per day now. You can still smell the stench left by the flood in the worst areas on a hot humid day. Amazing.

Off to the annual St. Ludmila Kolach Festival, to buy a dozen kolaches! YUM!!! :)

After Katrina, I am familiar with that smell! :(

  2. This may be my last post for a while. Wife and I are off to England on Monday for 3 weeks. A few days of business for me and then vacation we have friends in Plymouth and just NE of London. Definitely going to Duxford and hopefully to the factory where the Mosquito was originally produced. There will be much drinking of ale, eating of pub food and merriment.

I will take some pictures and try to act like a good 'simian' :D

Good luck Arch, be safe. :)

  3. The Louisiana government wants to dredge up an artifical barrier island in strategic locations to protect the marshlands. The whitehouse won't allow it until it can conduct ENVIRONMENTAL IMPACT studies!!

Yeah, appoint another bunch of radical numnuts to tell us whats best for us. The oil is OK.

There are enough illegal immigrants down here to surround the entire state, yet there are no clean up crews on the shoreline except for a few news setups. Maybe Arizona could supply a few! These boneheads are trying to wipe clean each blade of vegitation with rags. Why do I get the feeling that they are trying to empty the ocean with a seashell?

I don't think ANYONE understands the gravity of this disaster. Wait until this mess makes its way up the east coast. God forbid the arrival of a hurricane on the gulf coast. There will be oil raining down

    on more than one state.

I think, if we survive this spill, that we should continue drilling for oil, Arabia has enough billions. BP and the other oil companies should follow the rules, emergency, remote cutoff. Other countries will not allow drilling without that system. Our government agencies allow BP to govern themselves and make their own rules, while they surf porn all day on the public's dollar.

The main problem, in my humble opinion, is the corruption in our political system. There are appointed commities that were appointed decades ago by numerous presidents and they have nothing to do. The reason they were appointed has been resolved years ago but there comission was never disolved. We now have more government employees than we have workers. Thats hard to believe. How can 40% of the population supply the 60% of the population with their salaries, especially since they are the highest paid. We're broke!

Seems I should get off this soap box. Kinda went off a little.

  4. Because the surrounding soil is also dry and wicks away the water you are putting on your garden.

Ya know, I knew when I asked that question, that Clint, I mean Stans, was going to have the answer!

  5. Ominous clouds, thunder and SNIPITS of blue skies. But no rain, hot as hell and the vegie garden wilts. Why is it that well water don't perk up the garden like rain water does?
