  1. I've downloaded some skins into the Paint Schemes folder in IL-2 Sturmovik, putting them in the folders for the appropriate aircraft, but I can't figure out how to apply them. The tutorial I watched on YouTube showed a way of applying them in IL-2 Sturmovik 1946 using Quick Mission Builder, by clicking the button to the right of the Loadout field. This button does not appear in the original IL-2 Sturmovik. Is there another way to do this?

I figured out how to fix the problem: Went into setup, and under the joystick tab I unchecked the "Intro" box. Over the past couple of nights I've been doing single missions in the 109, on the easy setting, to get a feel for flying. I have a poor sense of relative motion at this beginner stage, so even positioning myself correctly to shoot down a lumbering Pe-8 is surprisingly difficult. I'll have to practice boom and zoom until I get it right. I forget whether it was Hartmann or Rall who advocated closing with the target until it fills your windscreen "so the enemy feels the full force of your guns". My amateurish version of this would get me shot down pretty quickly by defensive gunners if I flew in anything other than easy/invulnerable mode. For the time being I'm picking up some elementary habits of watching my airspeed and altitude, and keeping an eye on the artificial horizon. All completely new to me. I like the ability to save tracks and review my performance. Helps to correct mistakes. I will see if there's a Hurricane I can fly in IL-2 Sturmovik. The Red Air Force used them, so I imagine it's one of the flyable types in the sim.

Yes, I have the original title from the series. I definitely don't want to train on the 109, as I have zero sim or actual flying experience. I was hoping there might be an Arado 96 in there somewhere, but a Storch sounds fine. BTW, I figured out how to take over the controls in the flying tutorial but only the keyboard works. Still no response on the stick. Someone in another discussion group mentioned uninstalling the Logitech software. I might give that a try.

It would seem so. In that case, I will have to learn to take off safely in order to practice basic flying on one of the missions. There is a taxiing/takeoff lesson in this game also. Before buying IL-2 (this software is just called IL-2 Sturmovik; it's not the Cliffs of Dover version), I'd wondered whether the simulation would accurately duplicate the Bf-109G's torque characteristics, which IIRC required a certain rudder position or trim tab setting during takeoff. After several crashes I see that it certainly does. I still haven't figured out how to keep the aircraft on the runway during the takeoff roll. Thanks!

I've just installed IL-2 Sturmovik and have attempted to "take the controls" at the end of the first Bf-109 flying lesson. No response on any of the controls, either on my keyboard or movements of the Logitech Attack 3 joystick (strangely, the joystick does work on missions, but that's of no help when one hasn't learned to fly yet). Where can I go for troubleshooting information on this problem? Thanks.
