  1. Tomcats are tits up machines but in the days of a smaller military and the need for more flexable weapons it is a no brainer to see why they did this.

IMHO-this is the success of the Corps, always doing way more with way less.

What is really strange though is how near the end of the life of the Tomcat they keep adding more and more capability. Just before the last cruise, the F-14's recieved the software and capability to not only lift but drop GBU-31 JDAM's, along with the ability since 1994-95 time frame to operate as a Fast FAC with the LANTRIN system and heck even drop Paveway bombs, along with thier own versions of plain ol' dumb iron death. So just like the B-52 they were recieving upgrades that could extend thier useful life. Now I will admit that a few of them were getting pretty long in the tooth and maintenance is hard, my last cruise VF-41 was operating one of the originial blk of F-14A's that were built in 1970 and introduced to the fleet in 1972. However, that is what you get with operating 30yrd old birds and riding them hard and put to bed wet. I will tell you from personnal experience the AWG-9 was a powerful system when compared to a few other radar systems. When you have power supplies with big red marking near an 4in diameter cannon plug and it is marked "Danger 200KWATTS+" and when you see a power cable fail and a blue lighting bolt come shooting out and torch not only a TV but also a radio and computer in direct path to ground that is something to fear. The AWG-9 had 2 supplies like that B)

  2. As a kid I remember looking at cruise books of my father and uncles and looking at squadrons that flew F-14's, A-7's, A-6's, S-3's, SH-3's, EA-6B's, E-2C's. Now as I go on flight decks the composition is F-18E/F's, F-18C/D's, F-18A+ (for Marine units), SH-60F, E-2Cs, EA-6B's.

I was so glad the old breed did as well as it did. Here is to the New Breed of the Carrier Air Wing and hope that it can do just as well.

    Thanks for the Memories :popcornsmilie:

  3. THe Barbels were tasked with the same sort of missions that thier nuclear brethern were. So they would hunt other submarines, hunt surface ships, deliever SEALs, mining. Reading up in a couple books they do stated that though the ship was cleared to use the Mk48 and Mk48ADCAP they were never cleared to use Harpoon. I know that one was forward deployed in Japan and the other was in San Degio or Pearl and up until 1984 there was a third in the class the USS Bonefish which was homported in either Norfolk or Charleston(I have conflicting info). The Bonefish was removed from service due to fire in her engine room in 1988.

  4. There are few places right now you can download new scenarios for both H3 and HC.

The first is Harp Gamer dot com under button that says "HC Scen/AAR" if you click that it brings up a page on which there are a series of scenarios. All you have to do is download them and unzip to the main HC directory. When loading the game select the battleset that the scenario was created for and then select "load user scenario". Oh and here is a break down of what the various file names extensions are and to what battlesets they go with. I would recommend maybe printing it out and have it sit with you for a while taped to your monitor or to your desk so that you can use it as a quick ref until you start to remember what scenarios mean what.

Harp Gamer also carries H3 scenarios, these are a little easier to load and play. At the scenario selection screen click the "load file" button. I would recommend that you create a directory in your H3 battleset directory (where the scenarios are stored) that you will place all the unzipped scenarios that you download. I do that to keep track of what 3rd party scenarios I have and to keep from downloading multiple copies that are scattered all over my HD's.

The other major webpage that has both HC and H3 scenarios and files is Harpoon HQ, these folks are more about H3, but they do have a slowly growing selection of HC scenarois as people build them.

Finally there are a couple Yahoo Groups that deal with Harpoon. A few of these are request to be invitied in. They do this primarily to keep the spammers down. These groups have been very useful too, since a few of them are willing to help rookies in scenario design; test, critic, play, and build nice scenarios that everyone can have fun with.

  5. If I remember right they have keep the timebomb in the beta for right now. The work around, if I remember right, is to roll the clock of your computer back to a period before it expired and see if that will help you any.

  6. Paddles,

It is a great website. Remember they are copyrighted to the US DoD for limited public use. So you can't re-sell them, but you can post them and use them to a point for your own personnal use.

Oh and here are a few in case you get tired of waving those wands,

  7. My name is Charles Berlemann. I have been reading and posting to Hull for a while since I discovered Dr. Who's website when I was in high school. I have been playing Harpoon in computer form since I saw it being demoed at a local computer shop. After joining the US Navy in 1998, I have had a chance to live the adventure for real. I have been on board the greatest carrier, the USS Enterprise CVN-65 from 1999-2003, as a maintaininer for the F-14 radar systems. While on board I was there when the whole world turned upside down that september morn in 2001. After that and some school I have had the chance to be stationed onboard the USS Harry S. Truman as part of VAQ-130 the Zappers providing ECM coverage to the guys on the ground. I was on the flight deck as we launched all 4 birds of my squadron on the 30th of Janurary 2005 to support the elections. I am still in and have actually decided to re-up again for 4 more years the friday before Memorial day, time flys when your having fun. I have just recently gotten involved with and trying to play the pen and paper version of Harpoon as well. I now own HC Gold, H3, and H4 paper rules.

  8. Paddles,

Check out this website Defense Visual Information Center they are the clearing house of all US DoD photographers and have relased for limited public use a number of intresting pictures. I have found all sorts of pictures playing around on this site, the search engine is kind of funky, but you never know what you will find. The site says they have only saved pictures going back to 1979, but I have found ones from World War 2 on up to today.

    Some examples:

  9. Paddles,

Question about this. I just tried to play around and post a couple of items and I get an error saying that posting to the calander is off limits to me. What is the work around for that?
