  1. d'ya think those F-15 boys were doing some serious grunting through those turns!

You ain't kidding...a corner a hundred yards across, wings at about 80 degrees, burners on, speed brakes out, a 180 to a level roll out, then a 80 degree climb out of sight in about 5 seconds (low cloud level, but impressive nonetheless).

    AWESOME! The race too! :D

  2. Sheesh. I was up past midnight and at it early again this morning, putting the finishing touches on "Chronicles of Cappabar".

Put a few burgers on that grill, Cobraj. It may seem un-American, but I don't care for ribs. Burger and an MGD, please.

    Plebian tastes, I know.

    Jim

If you want to be real "plebian", make them Bubba Burgers..."it ain't a burger, if it aint a Bubba!"

Boats, who didn't wake up till 11, since he didn't get to sleep till 4:30 in the morning...

  3. Sure hope Boats took a boat, looks like it might come in handy.

Yah, had next best thing: ponchos and a cushion for my sore ass. Race didn't start till 10:30, three and a half hours after the planned start. But boy, howdee! What a hell of a race! Smoke had a car no one could beat, and he had no intentions of letting anyone stay in front of him long. I was right by the two big wrecks of the night, and the CRUNCH of all that expensive sheetmetal was awesome, as was the thunder of the engines doing 180mph, the smell of that 110 octane, and the sheer power of 37,000 hp going by you in the blink of an eye. Got to see two pair of F-15Cs doing the tightest turn I've ever seen a aircraft do...literally a 180 inside a 300 foot diameter. I had no idea they could turn that tight....and that loud! Burners wide open, and 50 feet of yellow flame coming out the cans! Then the B1-B flybys! Right up to the raceway, and BOOM! ROAR! All four burners kicked in, and long lances of fire came out the rear..AWESOME!

Great race, no one had anything for Smoke, who would not be denied the checker, and Dale Jr. seriously got his act together, going from 33 to top 10 in less than 30 laps, and contended all night long after that. Mark had a helluva car too, and would have had at least a top five, if it weren't for a wreck, which happened right in front of us :o

Boats, who is tired, but happy

  4. Leaving in just a few, to go to the Pepsi 400, being run at the hallowed halls of Daytona! I live just 90 miles away, so it's a down and back thing for me. Taking the son-in-law and grandson (his first race!).

    BOOGITY, BOOGITY, BOOGITY!

  5. Oh make no mistake that them 'Cats get big. We used to run trot lines all the time. Best thing we found for biat were livers. But we pulled a 35lb Channel Cat (five pounds shy of the state record) out of the Warrior River and there was an old boy that owned a bait shop had a live Blue Cat in a huge aquarium that in his shop. It was the pushing sixty pounds itself. State Record for a catfish in Alabama is 111lbs at, get this yall, Wheeler Reservoir. May be something to that tale yet.

Gunny, I have, with my own eyes, seen a 57 pd cat pulled out of Lake Rousseau in Florida...helped pull the big SOB out of the boat. And heard much the same stories of cats in the Rodman Dam spillways south of Palatka. The story I hear, is that a cat will put his lazy self in the spillway, and just eat what comes through. After a certain umber of years, he pushes out the competition, and sorta fills the pipe up...or near so.

  6. Why don't you guys just meet the silly bastige in the sky, shoot his silly arse down, and be done with him? He's just another blow-hard Nip Zero driver, and a half dozen tracers in that flying Molotov cocktail he rides ought to teach him a little humility, if not English...

BTW, podna, your pseudo-Japanese inflected English is a wee bit lame

Boats, who really wouldn't mind calling away the Deck Div to launch the ships boat, so he can go drag his barbecue'd corpse back to the ship... :P:lol:

  7. Junior is driving Michaels car this year. DEI didn't just swap pit crews...they swapped the entire setup, cars, mechanics, body shop, fabricators and all. Junior is not going to do well, until he gets decent equipment.

His contract is through 07, and unless Junior starts acting like an ass in public, his fans will stay loyal to him, and as long as the fans stay, so will Budweiser. Richard Childress has said that if Junior decides to come to RCR, he will get the #3 car...and no one else will drive that number but Junior. Somehow, I suspect, that if he did go to RCR, a lot of people at Hendricks and Roush would have heart attacks :P:D

Boats, who will be at the Pepsi 400 in the Oldfield stands next week, Section C, row 10

    WOOHOO!

  8. Skipper, I think you need to put on your Joe Foss flight jacket, and teach this Nip the finer points of ACM ;)

Boats, who will have the boys in the gun tubs ready, if Ronin is foolish enough to fly near my tin can

  9. Actually, I call them "targets".

My aircraft will be the Hawker Hurricane Mk.1a. That should be adequate.

So, it's Smoked Kippers vs. Sushi, and I don't aim to lose.

    Time and place?

I would think that you would bring out your Mossie...blinding fast aircraft, with nice assortment of weaponry...my favorite Brit aircraft

  10. Sorry for a late reply, I just got back from vacation. My sympathies go out to you and your family, Donny. I know how tough this is, having lost both my father and mother-in-law in the past two years. I can take comfort in knowing, that both are in a better place, and both they, and Him, are looking down at me now.

  11. Sweet, Stans! And from a squadron of Frisbees attached to the Saratogas air wing! The Sara was my all time favorite ship, and I was immensely saddened the day the CO stepped down the brow for the last time.

  12. Two things....that cat looked just like my buddy, Hebert, and if it had been him, that car would have had the sh!t beat out of it, and it's owner would on the way to the hospital, and I wouldn't have cared much about going to jail.

I REALLY like my cat....

Boats, in who's neighborhood, cats are safe...because I make them that way.

  13. Title says it all!!! Go Mark!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Yup, ol Mark run a damn fine race, and Greg Biffle had a monster of a car...don't think anything could have beat him, not even Jimmy Johnstons ego...damn the bad luck, Jeff Gordon got nudged into the wall, ol Tony's meds must have run out on him...and what the hell was my guy, Ryan, thinking, when he did a gas and go? "Yes, I want to slip from 5th to 8th"?

    Boats

  14. Well, they are being barred from schools and colleges, so they have to recruit somewhere.

Stans, I don't think it's just as simple as recruting for NASCAR...I think that NASCAR understands that it's audience is a pretty patriotic bunch, and really likes seeing the military so closely entwined with what NASCAR does. It's just plain old good marketing, and I for one, really, REALLY like seeing a huge sporting event where you get to hear an invocation that has the words "God" and "Christ" sprinkled liberaly throughout it, and every blessed one speaks to the troops in harms way, and then see 200,000 screaming red white and blue NASCAR fans go dead quiet for the Anthem...of course, followed by the fly-by ;)

    Boats

  15. AND MARINE CARS TOO!

Cheap shot by Jr to take out the 15. I am an 8 fan, but what he did was wrong.

Sorry, forgot about the Marine car ;) And I don't really think Junior meant to bump Mikey's car. Drivers unconsciously check up a bit at Charlotte, especially after seeing how easy it is to spin out in certain places. I'll be generous to Dale Jr., and say that Mike checked up a hair, as he was tapping a bit of gas.

I really hope that he wasn't trying to do a bump pass on Mike, and don't truly think he was. Come to think of it, doing a bump pass would have been stupid, since there were cars on the inside, and a bump pass only works if you have the inside clear to go around.

Boats, who is REALLY glad that Ryan Newman made it back to the front, and finished fifth with a bunch of ugly tape on the nose, and ended up fourth in Cup points after the night was over :D:D:D:D

    Boats

  16. I guess it depends on the car's setup...several cars, notably Ryan Newmans, could navigate the course at very high speeds, without mishap. You had to have your chassis set up right, and you had to pick your line going to and coming off the turns.

And CFran, there are Navy cars, Coast Guard cars, Air Force cars, and Army cars. NASCAR has to be the most patriotic sport in the USA, and does an outstanding job of highlighting the military at every race. Hats off to NASCAR, for recognizing the importance of our people serving and protecting our nation, and putting them front and center of every race!

  17. S!

“The muffled drum’s sad roll has beat the soldier’s last tattoo; No more on life’s parade shall meet that brave and fallen few. On Fame’s eternal camping ground, their silent tents are spread; But glory guards with solemn dignity the bivouac of the dead.” (Theodore O’Hara, 1847)

I am off to see my wife deploy to finsih some training and then a possible deployment to Iraq.

Salute to Boats, and all Combat sim vets, American, Canadian, Austrilian, Englsih and others.

Shep, regretfully, I have never served my nation. I have a profound and unabiding respect for our armed forces, and the Navy in particular. I've been often mistaken by Naval personnel, including Chiefs, that I was a retired Chief. This is probably due to my many years of work as a contractor aboard US Navy ships, and my extensive reading concerning the US Navy (not to exclude my reading of the other armed services, mind you).

If I have caused anyone to believe that I had served, please forgive me...I did not intend to do so.

  18. Gettsyburg is a very good game, if he can get the hang of enfilade fire and flank charges he'll be golden man. :D

He figured out the flank charges and enfilade fire last night :D

Boats, who is very proud of his budding general

  19. Hand over heart, eyes to the flag, with deepest respect to those who served in our defense...

And from one of my growing list of milblogs, BLACKFIVE,

    "Day Is Done,

    Gone the Sun,

    From the Earth,

    From the Hill,

    From the Sky,

    All Is Well,

    Safely Rest,

    God Is Nigh"

I suggest everyone go read his Memorial Day article:

  20. I think DW hit the nail on the head, when he said that Charlotte is suddenly turned into a 2.5 mile long, very high speed Bristol. Sad to say, Bumpy did a real lousy job of re-surfacing the track, based on all the problems tonight, not the least, the huge chunk of crack filler that ended up in Gordons grille.

My guy, Rocket Ryan Newman, is hanging onto 3 place by the skin of his teeth. I'm just hoping he gets a top five out of it, and advances into the Chase points.
