Yesterday, in Hickory, North Carolina, an F-86 skidded off the end of the runway in what may have been an aborted take off. Witness said it appeared that the pilot was trying to stop the take off run, but the Saber went off the end of the runway, through the fence, down a small hill onto a street and burst into flames. The pilot is reported to have died instantly. This is a sad day in the aviation community, the pilot and aircraft were in route to Oshkosh, Wisconsin.

One of the currently active pilots on the BlitzPigs squadron had this to say about this tragic crash...

Crap....

I bet his breaks failed. That was a problem on them as well as our N265 (T-39) Sabreliners. Both the F-86 and N265 had very similar systems and some were the same. There was always a possibility that an antiskid system failure would disable the breaks completely. We always thought that sucked and wanted a fix for the antiskid system so this couldn't happen. I remember a Sabreliner going off a runway about 15 years ago but is wasn't going very fast and no one got hurt. I had both main antiskids fail once but I just popped a tire on a wet runway since the brakes still worked. We had an emergency procedure to pop the gear up and slide on our belly if this happened and we lost brakes as well. There's an override lever on the gear handle to put the gear up on the ground.

Note: Edited a tad for clarity.
