Yeah, that's why you can take the rest of the afternoon off!

I'm really enjoying the Front Page News. I'm seriously looking at building a new rig this year. Looks like my motherboard chipset choices are the 965 (might not be the absolute best for hard core gaming and overclocking, but a good value), the 975 (can be pricey), and the 680i (I think this one has yet to be fully matured and stabilized and Nvidia changes drivers more often than most of us change socks  ). At any rate, Core2Duo is still beating AMD on every benchmark and AMD has yet to adequately answer that challenge. Think I'll be opting for a 7900 series video card, the 8800 is expensive and really won't shine until DX10 happens.

Stans,

Donnie is definitely the man when it comes to keeping us up-to-date on all the hardware stuff.

Late to the dance, as usual. :(

But anyway, as to the Intel dominance, you are probably correct. I don't think I'll be able to cobble another rig together for another year or better,

as my blue cube is only 6 or so months old. Maybe a MLU in the summer or summat. I just hope it's not my last AMD, as I've been building them

AMD based for close to 10 years now.

Also, as to the PT boat dealio, be wary. I don't believe there are any PT-109 types in there, as in it is Russian boats only. Seems a waste, and Oleg-esque,

but what do ya do? Combat Simulation just doesn't pull down the big bucks, so very few US developers are interested anymore `twould seem...

Thanks guys. Just tryin' to help out. I made my first step this week in starting my new system build. Bought a new Dell 2407FPW 24 inch Ultrasharp LCD Flat Panel Monitor. This thing is the cats ass! Gave my LG 19" LCD Flat Panel monitor to the wife to replace her Envision 15" LCD Flat Panel monitor. As of right now, I am going with an Intel Core 2 Duo unless AMD releases something just as good or better, if price is the same...but that doesn't look like it is going to happen anytime soon. And the more I read about Vista, I am going to hold off on it. Here is a bit from Maximum PC Magazine, Feb. 2007 Issue:

No Hardware Audio: It has no support for DirectSound 3D or support for hardware-accelerated 3D sound. When you run legacy DS3D games such as Call of Duty 2 on Vista, it won't give you the option to enable 3D sound or features that require hardware acceleration, such as EAX.

Vista Doesn't Work With A Lot of Bleeding-Edge Hardware: The BIOS on your laptop you bought in March desn't work with Vista. Nor does your high-end USB microphone. And you can kiss that joystick-port-based Thrustmaster flight stick goodbye, too. We are experiencing more compatibility issues with hardware just plain not working with Vista than we did with any other Microsoft OS since Windows 2000.

Application Issues: There are dozens of applications that don't work properly with Vista. High-profile programs such as iTunes, disc burning apps, and pretty much everything that has to do with DVD ripping or viewing. And virtually any Java-based app that bundles the Java runtime automatically kicks the desktop back to Vista's Basic mode, obviating the performance benefits you get from running Aero.

I think the smart thing to do at this time is to stick with Windows XP SP-2, Vista is brand new and is likely to suffer a number of teething problems, so wait for them to be sorted out. Vista's claim to fame will likely be aeroglass and DX10. Where is DX10? I Dunno. And who's to say DX10 will improve anything outside of Flight Sim X?

I don't see AMD answering Intel's challenge any time soon. AMD is going quad core, sort of. Intel is about to release the Core2Duo E4300 and that promises to cost less and perform (overclock) at least as well as the E6300. Intel is also coming out with a quad core solution that will fit the LGA775 socket, so going with Intel would seem to make long term sense.

Really, the big obstacle I'm seeing is on the motherboard front. I've spent the better part of this morning looking at new motherboards. The 975X boards tend to limit overclocking. The 965 are better, but not perfect and tend to be pricey. The 680i has a lot of promise, is pricey, and based on Nvidia's video card driver issues, just has me wondering if the motherboard drivers will be any different.

I'm also leary of the the 8800 series video cards due, again, to driver support.

That's one of my only gripes with the game so far Spec. I think there some Elco boats but they will be British flagged boats. If my memory serves me, you'll have them, the Vosper torpedo boats, E-boats, and those ugly Russian things. There will be no Pacific in the original offering, if at all.

:edit: Yes Doug, I'm interested in this title for the pure fact that I like PT Boats.

I like PT boats too but when you say the words "PT boat" the first thing, or the 13th thing, that comes to my mind isn't Russian PT boats.

I mean hell there's more stuff for WWI coming out this year than there is for the PTO. That is weird. And of the rest of the WWII stuff is set on the Russian front. That is weirder. Yeah I know about Oleg's BoB, there's no way I see it making it out anytime this year.

I'm honestly half expecting a Civil War observation balloon sim before we see another PTO flight sim. <_<
