Tech question for the CSIM masses...

Ok here goes...

Donnie is pullin' his hair out trying to solve this one. Here is a bit of history first...

I have cable internet service. I also have VOIP telephone service thru the same provider. I was using two modems (one for phone, one for internet) for well over a year (by use if a splitter). When I got back Sunday night the Sunday before this past one, I had no internet service, but I did have phone service. I hooked my PC directly to my internet modem, bypassing my router...still no internet, just phone. So then I disconnected my phone modem from the splitter and ran the cable from my internet modem to the wall outlet, (completely eliminating the splitter) the internet modem made good connection and I was back online. So I am figuring it is the splitter right? So I bought a new splitter with the same specs at Lowes, hooked it up as the original set up was done, and same problem. Phone workie, internet no workie!

So I called my ISP and told them what was going on, and they sent a tech out on Thursday past. Guy was real good, or at least I thought he was, he was impressed with my WWII posters, my Pacific Fighters desktop, model aircraft on the shelf, etc. This guy had a definite military haircut, so I asked him if he was still in the service at all. He said he was an Army Ranger. Physically...this guy looked the part. Had that same look as Pat Tillman...chiseled jaw, etc. Anyway...I am getting off the subject.

He ran his meter on cables downstairs, at my wall connection, etc. He asked why I had two modems running, as that wasn't a good idea as they would be fighting one another for bandwidth. I told him I owned the internet modem (Motorola SB5100) and wanted to keep using it if possible at the time the vphone was installed, and that tech said it wouldn't be a problem, installed a amplifier on the line to boost the signal and it worked without a hiccup (well pretty much) since then. Mr. Ranger got everything working with both modems still connected, then advised me that if it was ok thru coming weekend not to call back. But if not call in and he suggested removing my Motorola modem and going with just the ISP provided phone modem, which can do both. Well 3 hours later it puked out again. On Monday I called tech support, explained to the guy the situation, I had already removed my internet modem and splitter and set up the phone modem direct from the wall outlet to my router before I called. He did his thing on his end, got it registered as the only modem, etc. So connection problem is fixed...

HELLO!!!! YOU STILL AWAKE???? Now for the problem that I started out to tell you in the first place! :D

What is happening now is that I can't send e-mail to my brother-in-law from my PC, or Lottie's PC. Using my mediacom address or my csim address, which uses a different server obviously. My brother-in-law can send to me, I can't send to him. I get the following return message:

Final-Recipient: rfc822; <betxxx@ptd.net>

Action: failed

Status: 5.1.0 MAIL FROM: <donlottie@mchsi.com> 553 REPLY: 553_sorry,_your_mailserver_[204.127.203.212]_is_re

I however can send to him via Hotmail without a problem. I tried hooking my PC direct from the modem, bypassing the router. Still doesn't work.

The second weird thing is that I can no longer acess MSNBC's website from my PC or Lottie's PC. I haven't come across any other sites I can't access. Oh and also it doesn't matter which browser either...FireFox or IE.

I have tried shutting off the XP Firewall. Doesn't help.

Any Ideas? I'll check back after I get today's news posted to see if you guys have any suggestions...related to this here problem.

Thanks in advance!

Donnie

Sounds like your ISP, when they reset whatever it was on their end to have it recognize only one modem, somehow, they choked your connection to their SMTP server. It seems like the ISP isn't recognizing your modem as an authorized user of their SMTP server (they do that to stop spammers).

Your Hotmail works because it's web-based and has nothing to do with your ISP.

Doubtful that anything changed in your email settings.

My advice: Call Tech Support again. Explain your email problem complete with the above error messages.

Oh sorry! I forgot to mention I use Mozilla Thunderbird for my e-mail. l9iblush.gif

Ok by why is MSNBC farked? Lottie says she can get it at work. I can't even get the RSS Feed to load in FireFox.

But you are probably right Doug, I should call tech support...and talk to Punjay. <_<

I use Thunderbird too, and unless you reset the outgoing SMTP server setting, then it's your ISP's doing, not yours.

I'm thinking that the other modem that you were using, but now isn't being used, was the one that your ISP had identified as having access to their SMTP server. Now, because that one modem has been taken out of your setup, their SMTP server does not recognize the remaining modem's MAC address.

In a nutshell, tell them to add your current modem's MAC to their SMTP server tables.

You should be able to SMTP anywhere, with any modem, as long as it accepts your username and password.

The only time the MAC address should be an issue is the initial connection, not when using it. When it does a DHCP renew, it wants it, but once authorized,

it should just keep feeding the need.

Now, upon closer inspection, it looks like his ISP is the one who is kicking it back.

I will assume the "J" was dropped in rejected, and it does not want to accept from your IP, or ISP's IP.

Too much spam generated from your ISP users?

Anyway, yeah, call Habib in New Delhi and let him know what it says, or try to get a new IP via command line. I would explain it here, but if you don't know

what I'm talking about, it is best not to experiment...

Habib and Hadji must of been on break yesterday afternoon, as I waited around on hold listening to some really bad elevator music for 20 minutes until I gave up. Now this morning, MSNBC is available, as is the RSS feed. Haven't tried the e-mail yet.

Just tried e-mail to ptd.net. Still rejected.

Weird. Maybe it will, as we say in the trade, "propagate" in the next 24 hours. However, that's really only a term we use for website domains. If it ain't working in the next 24 hours, get yourself a bowl of popcorn, call the tech drones, and settle in for a marathon "on hold" session. :(

Just tried that this morning again. Getting the "There is a reported service outage in your area"...otherwise known as Hadji and Habib are on an extended break for kabobs with extra Curry.
