Donster
Morning all. Got home last night around 9pm. Drove though some freezing rain, sleet and snow. This morning everything is covered with a thin layer of ice. It is supposed to get up to 42F today, so that will take care of the ice.
Stans
Morning all, it's a balmy 30F this morning, which is normal, and we will see a high of 52F, which is normal. Two days of normalcy? Yep, must be The Return of Global Warming, starring Al Gore as Look Skyisfalling and Dick Cheney as Dark Polluter and featuring Nancy Pelosi as Princess Leper. Bloody Heat Pump that supplys our heating and cooling has gone out, and we're talking about $6-7000 to replace, and it's bloody freezing here! I figure about $500 from each of you would just about do it, with $ 1000 from Doug as he's the Big Kahuna around here! Do I hear a big, "ALRIGHT?" Noooooooooooooooo? OK, then it's time for the wife to hit the street, I'm afraid! Honeeeeeeeey!!!

Tell you what Whiz, I will pay for the whole shootin' match for ya. Just as soon as my bail-out check arrives from the new King's...I mean President's administration. I asked for $1.2 billion, they said they would send at least $14 billion. As long as I got rid of my personal jet.
Stans
$5000 to $6000 is about what you'd pay for a new heat pump in Virginia, so that's not too bad unless that California cost is for a 800 square foot house and does not include installation, taxes, title, tags, destination charge, and recycling/disposal fee. Probably just for the estimate! Add another $6 grand for the actual heat pump.
Stans
Around here $6000 gets you a nice heat pump, installed! I expect California has a bunch of hidden fees and taxes associated with such things. I'm surprised California doesn't require its residents to wear a device to monitor the volume of air they breath, then assess a breathing tax. I feel a lot better now, and the wife breathed a sigh of relief at not having to perform in this chilly weather! It's not too bad in the summer, but.........................! Have a guy coming in on Monday to give an estimate on the heat pump, but $6000 is about the average apparently. Ours is about 25yrs old, and put in when they built the house, so it's not too bad, I guess. Still looking for Dougs check, as the others all ponied up, but it's probably in the mail, right Doug? Actually, the bummer is that we live about 100ft from the next County line, where they GIVE AND INSTALL NEW HEAT PUMPS FOR FREE! Just my luck! Stans
Average life of a heat pump is about 15 years, 20 with gentle use and annual maintenance. You got 25 out of yours so you did really well.
Whizkid
Forget it! I'm going to try and have it repaired for a lot less loot! Small leak of Freon can be traced and stopped. Reversing solenoid can be replaced, maybe. Start checking tomorrow.
Stans
If the freon leak is in the compressor, then you'll need a new compressor and that is most of the cost of a whole heat pump.
The Dude
Whiz, Heat pump? $6,000? That's outrageous, but what do I know from heat pumps!? Is this a ground, air, or water source heat pump? Is a heat pump the only route to go? What about boilers or force air furnaces? How about a nice high-efficiency pellet stove? You're in Californy, for pity's sake, you should be able to eat some beans and warm up the room that way ... just don't strike a match
