Stans
Maybe it's nothing, but twice now when I turn on my computer something different has been happening. I am used to turning it on, hearing a big "click" and then everything boots and there is computing happiness. Twice in the past two days I have turned it on and heard "click..ta....click..ta....click..ta....click" then it boots up and everything seems ok. What's with the "click..ta" sounds? It almost sounds like the turn signal unit in a school bus or large commercial truck.
Donster
Remove the side panel (or complete cover), boot up and see if it is coming from the hard drive. (Hold onto it with your fingers) If it is the HD, you may be close to failure time.
cobraj
sounds like your hard drive is about to go south... The heads might be having a seek problem and for now are able to get it sorted to boot. I wouldn't power it off and on too much, unless you got a back up! Spectre_USA
Concur, start backing stuff up ASAP, and leave it running, if possible. The power supply does not have a relay or anything, so it is most likely the HDD. If your BIOS supports S.M.A.R.T. drive, take a look there, it may have a message for you... Stans
Just got back from Best Buy, first time I have ever been in a Best Buy. Circuit City has some serious competition with these guys. Bought a Western Digital 80 Gigabyte hard drive for $90. This thing is 10 times the capacity of the failing drive. Plan: Back up all data files onto CD's, install new drive, format, install Windows 98 SE, then reinstall drivers and data files. Is there a website that has all the Windows 98 SE upgrades since M$ no longer supports Win 98?
Donster
Microsoft is still supporting 98. They backed off on dropping support awhile back.
Stans
Danke Donnie! That makes it much easier to get back up and running!!!! My current HD has four partitions, C for operating system and drivers, D for business applications, E for games and personal stuff, and F for storage. All in just 8 GB. I am thinking I might not partition the new drive, it probably won't be long and this computer will be relegated to a business machine.
Schatten
Good luck Stans, and yes Best Buy is indeed awesome. I like that store so much I'll drive 60 miles each way, in the damn snow, to go there. Other than that, what they said, make sure you back as much up as humanly possible. Been there, done that, have the burnt computer hulks to show for it.
