Crash Test

Put a Hummer and an F150 at the end of the line and you would get the same result. Use a Semi hauling a full load and it would have been worse.

My personal opinion is that air bags and crumple zones and all of that stuff have just added needless expense to cars.

If you want to cut down traffic deaths do the following.

1/Make it such that cars will not start or run (and will shut off) unless everybody is wearing a seat belt.

2/Have cars start with a coded card. The card includes your driver "skill level" ..not hard to do with current technology

3/Have a gradualted license system with a series of (hard) tests so that if you can't drive with the specified skill level you can't exceeed "x" speed and can't get on the interstate

4/If you drive intoxicated ...you lose your card

Here in Virginia if you get caught driving while intoxicated or under the influence of a narcotic (illegal or prescription) and you lose your license for one year, plus a fine of $250 to $2500, depending upon your level of intoxication and the mood of the judge and up to one year in jail, again depending upon the judge. Don't do it again within 10 years or you will be guaranteed a heavy fine, jail time, and loss of license. Oh, and if you are over a certain level of intoxication, you must have a breathalizer ignition block installed in your car, at your own expense, in order to get your license back. Virginia takes DUI and DWI very serious these days.

As for a skill test, if you can keep all the slow pokes in one lane it might work, otherwise they will add to congestion and end up getting run over. Yeah, I see plenty of people get into the passing lane and drive slower than the rest of the traffic. Perhaps it would be better to simply make it far harder to obtain a license.

Yes, I happen to live in the county with the highest number of DWI arrests and the second highest in fatal crashes in the whole state. That has spurred the county to dramatically step up traffic enforcement activities. More speed traps and DWI check points.
