Wife's new computer

Checked Dell and again at Best Buy. eMachines were not considered thanks to the input of Donnie and after seeing the computer case in person all I can say is they are pretty darned small! My wife really wanted a new printer (old one is an old Canon and is quite temperamental) and a flat panel monitor. Dell 4700C series looked promising, but speakers and printer were extra as was some of the productivity software. Best Buy had a good deal on a Gateway 506GR that came with everything she wanted. The flat panel monitor is 17 inches and looks pretty nice! Came with Windows XP Home SP2, McAfee anitvirus system and Microsoft Works. USB, Firewire, audio and microphone ports front and rear (more USB and Firewire ports than you can shake a stick at!). DVD-RW and CD-RW drives, 3.2 GHz Pentium, 1 GB RAM.

Set up was a breeze and Windows XP logged itself onto the home LAN system without me having to load software. Now she is happy, a new computer, she can burn CD's and DVD's, watch movies, surf the web, play games, and maybe do a little real work.

The last Gateway computer she had lasted 8 years, maybe this one will go the distance too.

Now we have one dead computer in a good case, so I am thinking about swapping out the guts of my current system and stuffing them into the dead case and using my current case with a new power supply to build my new computer.

Don't know what your Budget is or if you have a Circuit city near you but they had a good H.P. computer for $699 after rebate . original price is $800. pentium 4 , 800mb fsb, 200gb drive, dvd burner, cd. I'm flying with the boys on a p4 1.8ghz no problem...so plenty of horse power there...

I don't mind building my own system, especially when I am not on a time constraint. My planned system is an AMD 64 3500+, 1GB RAM, 160 GB Western Digital HD (already have this item), CD-RW DVD drive (already have this item), Sound Blaster Audigy 2ZS sound card, and a NV6800GT PCIexpress 256MB RAM video card. This will likely run me somewhere around $1500 to $1600, but it should be a solid performer for a while.

I just figure that if I am going to spend some dollars and invest the time I might as well build something that I will not have to monkey with for two or three years. My previous computers have all been two or three steps below top shelf and invariably after one or two years I was buying upgrade parts for them and they still weren't all that great. Just planning on doing this one right with an eye towards future developments, that is why I am picking a motherboard with PCI express and an AMD 939 socket.
