Stans
Yeah, support for XP was supposed to end how long ago? And now it's just XP SP2 that is no longer supported, but SP3 will continue for a while longer. Yes, Windows 7 is considered to be better than Vista, but for many of us XP still rules since it is well supported, stable, and paid for.
The Dude
That's a whole passel o' news, Donnie So, Splinter Cell: Conviction is going to have DRM where you must be connected to the Internet so it can phone home or you won't be able to start the game. Neoqb just took this off (at least I think they did) of their Rise of Flight game because gamers were shittin' babies over its intrusiveness. Does Ubi know about Neoqb's experience? I've said it before, and I'll say it again, this type of DRM will, in my opinion, only DECREASE retail sales and INCREASE the numbers of people who use cracked versions of the game. What's this with XP SP2 being EOL'd, but that XP SP3 will soon be released? It sounds as if XP is dead, and yet there's an XP SP3 in the offing? That don't sound very dead to me. Stans
No, XP SP3 was released over a year ago. Ending SP2 support means that support for SP3 will be next.
The Dude
Just had to post this follow-up: Ubisoft's new DRM cracked in one day: "Ubisoft's recent announcement that upcoming games would require a constant internet connection in order to play has been discussed at length on Slashdot ('The Awful Anti-Pirate System That Will Probably Work'). Many were of the opinion that this new, more demanding DRM would have effectiveness to match its inconvenience, at least financially justifying its use. Others assumed that it would be immediately cracked, as is usually the case, leaving the inconvenience for paying customers and resulting in a superior product for pirates. As usual, the latter group was right. Though Ubisoft won't yet admit it, Skid-Row managed to crack the new DRM less than a day after it was first released." Full Discussion at Slashdot.org Ubi has just ensured they will make less money on this title. This comment cracked (no pun intended) me up: Engineering hours building unbreakable DRM: $1.6M Marketing devoted to managing customer hostility to new DRM: $800K Lost sales due to customers boycotting your product: $2M Having some wiseass kid from Sweden break your DRM on the first day: Priceless
