A six game suspension does not sound like much, but he doesn't get paid while on suspension, so it could be, in essence, a 2.8 million dollar fine. That's a stiff penalty for an accusation that has yet to be proved. Sports leagues need to hand out stiff penalties for bad conduct as the players often tend to be idolized, especially by children. I do have an issue for penalizing a player for something that has not been proved. Of course, there has been more than one woman charging him with sexual misconduct. It's interesting that the potentially most damning evidence was a security camera tape that was accidentally erased.

If the allegations had been proven, Roger Goodell would've dished out a suspension much longer than 6 games. He was punishing Big Ben not so much for the allegation, but for his conduct and judgment that, if better, would've avoided the situation altogether.

For a guy who could land plenty of women and afford a hotel room, following a single drunk co-ed to another bar, "meeting" her in a restroom, then having a bodyguard run interference just smacks of low class dumbass all around.

The "good" commissioner needs to be fairer with the punishment. So far as I'm concerned, and believe me when I say Ben is definitely guilty of being criminally stupid, the NFL is very picky about who they punish and how bad. I mean come on, what's his name that killed the guy while drunk driving on South Beach is back in the league. Ray Lewis never so much as sit a game after his run in with the authorities. Vick should not be back in the league but there he is. I could go on but I think this one was over the top compared to some of the "punishment" that has come down.

To be fair, Goodell wasn't commish when Ray Lewis was on trial. That said, I think Ben's punishment is on target, and I think the other cases should've been judged harder.

The Mike Vick case is interesting as well, because he was so in over his head in debt that he needed the income to pay back his sponsors and creditors, and he also had some high-powered advocates (see Dungy, Tony) assist on his behalf. I believe that Goodell's decision in this case was justice tempered with mercy.

That said, I really like what Roger Goodell is doing with the NFL. I also still despise Mike Vick, especially having adopted a dog with a history of abuse.

Granted about Lewis, but that was to illustrate the ongoing inequality that the NFL shows in it's punishment. If he wants to clean up the leagues image, then by all means, kick ass all the way. But cherry picking punishment makes him and the league look foolish.

As for Vick, let him go out and get a real job. Some punishment letting him get paid millions to sit the bench.
