Racing at Talladega

I got home just in time to see the start of the Sprint Cup race. My wife decided that we absolutely had to buy paint and paint supplies today, no waiting, can't do it tomorrow or next weekend when we will actually begin painting, but everything must be purchased today. Off to Lowe's, enjoyed waiting about 35 minutes for all the paint to be tinted and mixed, then go look at bird feeders and bird food (no idea what that has to do with painting, but I'm buying).

"Oh, by the way, since we will be near Kroger's Grocery we can stop and do the week's grocery shopping, it won't take long", she says as she produces a ticker tape list from her purse. I elected to stay in the car and listen to the pre-race coverage on the radio. An hour later, the misses shows up with a small cart of groceries. Not much, but she shops by going up and down each aisle. So the car is packed full, I tried to race home, but it's Sunday and everyone and his/her great grandparent is out for the Sunday drive.

Anyway, the opening laps are looking to be pretty exciting. No wrecking, everyone is playing nice, but lots of lead changes. Looks like the rear spoiler combined with a larger restrictor plate is making for single cars to get hung out to dry, running in a long line keeps you on the pace, but it seems the two car pairing is the key to getting to the front. Only problem is, everyone is pairing up and as soon as one pair takes the lead, another pair is mounting a challenge. Good racing, so far.

Ok, two wrecks now, first one was a single car, second one was a multi-car crunch up and no one has gone airborne, even when going backwards at over 100 mph. The rear spoiler is proving to be far superior to the wing in terms of handling and safety.

I caught the highlights on YouTube. Great finish

And ...

what's up with Jimmie Johnson being such a douchebag to his own teammate, not to mention part car owner? I never liked JJ for all sorts of reasons, but I like him even less now.

Response to Doug's spoiler:

I dunno, maybe he's been so successful for the past four seasons and now feels he's owed good finishes and another championship. Jeff Gordon was the one who encouraged Rick Hendrick to give Jimmy a shot in the Cup Series. Had it not been for Jeff, Jimmy might not have enjoyed such success and it seems that Jeff and Jimmy are at odds here lately.
