Donster
Morning. Hot. Muggy. Blah blah blah. The people of Iowa are coming out in droves and digging into their pockets, their closets for used clothing, to help out the flood victims from over the weekend and ongoing flooding. No State. No Feds. No FEMA. Lake Delhi is gone. Estimate is 2 years to rebuild. The road that washed out on both sides of the dam will take a few million to replace. And it is THE main road going through the county. What we need is the Seabee's from WWII to come in and they would have that road rebuilt in less than a week. Now it takes months just to decide who is going to pay for the work. Then another few months for bids. Sorry for the rant. But I am just sick and tired of our Government can respond to disasters in Haiti and other parts of the world in hours, but they leave our own taxpaying citizens to either sit and wait, or do it themselves. Iowans know that you have to get busy and do it yourselves. Unlike the people of New Orleans. And yes, that is a dig.
Whizkid
I'm really sorry about Iowas problems, Donnie. But on the upside, maybe you're better off not having FEMA stick its ugly nose in the tent, eh? I'm thinking of all the trailers they let rot in N.O. after Katrina. No Government is good Government, in my opinion. The locals are much smarter at fixing their problems than Washington.

Today the city of Cedar Rapids announced that the promised $1 million from FEMA for the damage to either repair or rebuild the city’s First Street Parkade is kaput. This parking ramp is downtown. Parking downtown for businesses and employees of businesses was a problem before the flood. And taking this parking facility out has been a real burden for people. Small businesses rely on that ramp for their customers to park and spend money. Many of these businesses have borrowed money to repair their stores/shops and reopen, after being promised help from FEMA. They haven't received it. They are paying loans that are higher interest than the loans that FEMA promised. It has been two years now.
Stans
Sorry, I'm sure the government can't send you any SeaBees, but maybe they can spare a few second lieutenants from the Army Corps of Engineers? Oh, and don't worry, they are second lieutenants, which makes them better than... never mind.
The Dude
Donnie, That sucks that the system is screwed up. Time to toss the "system". I think it'd be sooooo cool if young people could do a flash mob using those iPhones and cellphones they're so constantly engrossed in to rally people to help clean up the mess, bring in supplies, and just plain help in some very real and tangible way. It'd be interesting to see just how fast people could organize a complete restoration of the Lake Delhi area using nothing more than social networking and the inherent kindness of strangers helping others in need. Meh ... never gonna happen. Please, someone prove me wrong
