No105_Archie
Free enterprise Donnie me lad........it's what makes the world go round. The latest and greatest of the free enterprise countries is ( would you believe it CHINA ) they are "out competing" the rest of the world in manufacturing........of course the fact that they pay their people about "$2 a year" helps. This has the makings of turning into a political discussion so I'm going to run & hide now

Stans
Yep, free enterprise. You want to buy something, you pay the price. In a capitalist economy, profit is the motive for exsisting. I'll not begrudge the profits by Exxon-Mobile, but then I don't buy Exxon or Mobile fuels or oil if I can avoid them. That is called choice and that is what you have when there is competition. Baltar
Yes...semi-free enterprise. A huge portion of gasoline/petrol costs are taxes. at least 50% in the US, I hate to even conjecture how much it is here in the UK but we pay a lot more for fuel and it isn't exactly any farther away from where it is produced! Getting more politcal by the post...
Stans
I'd say it has been pretty factual. I think it is something like 37% in taxes in Virginia, I'm sure some states place even more tax on top of the 18.4% Federal tax. We all gripe and moan about the high price of gasoline, but I really don't think it has kept pace with inflation until recently. But to put things in perspective, at an average of $1.91 per gallon, compare that to a gallon of drinking water and it is still pretty cheap. Here is some interesting comparison data from Virginia http://www.vpcga.com/i4a/pages/index.cfm?pageid=
Whizkid
There's always somebody that spoils a good old political rant (Stans) by bringing in the facts, that ruins the whole thing! Take those facts and .....................! Now,where were we?

No105_Archie
I just looked at that link for prices in Virginia.......don't complain about the price of your gas....converting for the $US and gallon we pay $4.60 /gal for gas.......on the bright side though we can by Coke ( cola that is ) for $2.11/gal
Baltar
DO COMPLAIN OR THIS COULD HAPPEN TO YOU: When I lived in the US a few years ago I spent about $20 to fill up my car. Nothing special, a 4cyl Ford Focus with a 13 gal tank. I guess it would be a little more like $25 to fill now. Now I live in the UK and it costs me $40 to fill the tank of my 1.4l Diesel Rover Metro (a toy car). The difference is that the car I drive now only holds 5 gallons! Oh and it can be written off by hitting a small dog and barely pulls itself up a hill. It gets 55mpg and if I had a Focus here with a 2.0L gas/petrol engine I would not be able to pay the bills. I'm all for reducing dependance on foreign oil and developing alternate fuels but let capitalism sort that out...these fuel taxes really suck! Whizkid
Hey,Old Fox,now you know why I left Blighty in '56! After Suez I had a feeling we were on a downward path. Baltar
Yeah Whizkid, my wife has to listen to me rant and rave about the taxes here...poor thing. And I used to rant and rave about the taxes in the US so you can imagine I can be quite grumpy when that subject comes up! Conversation at my house: "Honey what is this bill? There's a tax to watch TV!? %&£# !!!" In defense of the British public...they don't like paying them either and I guess it is just in the stiff upper lip mindset to tolerate burdens. Respectable, but my point is...feel free to complian about the petrol/gas prices, just blame the right folks for the high prices!
