Don't hold your breath. I'm busy with end of month financials right now.

No problems. I wasn't directing the questions specifically to you. Others might care to answer. In fact in some cases there maybe no specific answer but more your personal preference. It is these that I am particularly keen to here about. eg. Your use of external stores ...... and surely somebody else must know what "racetrack" means ......

Surely somebody else must know what "external stores" & "racetrack" means ......

external stores =s Outboard Weapons. You know,, the stuff hanging off your wings. B)

"racetrack" means ......To loiter in a holding pattern.

"racetrack"...... Is any given pattern.

Although I do know what external stores are. My question was in regard to the appropriate use of them. You've quoted me incorrectly.

Use your external stores 1st over choosing internal weapons as to become stealthy 1st.

1. What's the "Racetrack"?

It's the pattern, just like Hawkx said.

2. With support packages to my flight, how do I determine if they need extra fuel?

Unfortunately, there's no easy way. Best thing you can do is have an idea of their range (from the manual) and look at the total distance on the waypoint screen. Also, don't be afraid to shorten the route a bit. Sometimes the "safe" route the computer plans is more trouble than it's worth.

3. I lost my AWACS after about 7 hours into the campaign.

...........should I have been more protective?

...........will I eventually get a replacement?

As I understand, this is a TAW bug. The planes crash on landing.

4. Why am I not allowed to edit my flight package?

Sure you are. Just delete your own flight and reinsert it to your liking.

5. To successfully knock out C4 targets I need to be more involved.

..........so why aren't there more Strike mission between the 6 and 10 hour mark of the campaign?

..........and why are there so many level 2, easy to complete, CAP missions during the same time?

CAP flights only require 2 fighters, strikes require a package. When your side starts to take attrition, you see it in the number of offensive sorties launched.

6. What are the little coloured squares on the map, next to the target, meant to indicate?

Those squares are the target. The number next to the square is the target's strategic priority, and corresponds to the order of the target list

7. Why, in some instances, can I not select extra fuel for say an F16 Strike group when for the F16 Escort group, in the same mission, I can?

You have to assign non-Raptor flights with pre-assigned loadouts. There may not be a loadout for what you like, or there may be hardpoint restrictions based on weight.

8. Sometimes, when the sun is at my 12 o'clock, the sun glare is so bad I have difficulty seeing my MFD's.

..........is this normal for all players?

..........can it be reduced?

Yes, if you mean all human players. You can remove it by turning off light source shading in the Options menu.

9. When you drop AG stores (if in a tight situation and your attempting to escape), is it to make you more stealthy or increase your speed or both?

Both. By reducing drag (and thereby increasing your speed for the same throttle setting), it also increases your fuel efficiency.

10.External stores are nice to have but at the expense of reduced stealth.

.........is it in order to fire them off when and if you need extra stealth, rather than not to load them initially?

If you know you're going stealth, it's best not to load external stores at all. Reason being that even if you fire or jettison all of your external stores, you will still have the hardpoints/racks on the wing, which will increase your RCS. With a stealth loadout, you have smooth wings and a reduced RCS.

11.Sometime in a strike mission on a enemy airbase, the base has huge AA resources sitting on the ground.

.........why don't they scramble rather than sit there like lame ducks? [or do they have a shortage of pilots ;)]

The same reason that airbases with no aircraft can suddenly sortie a pair of Su-27s to piss in your Cheerios. Just a TAWism.

In my case it got shot down. :( Should I have been more protective and will I get a replacement?

Q4. Why am I not allowed to edit my flight package?

Ah! You add by first deleting. Makes sense.

Q6. What are the little coloured squares on the map, next to the target, meant to indicate?

Good one! Nice!

Ye ....understand. Both F16's, different roles, different weapon loadout and then maybe a need for different fuel loads.

Q8. Sometimes, when the sun is at my 12 o'clock, the sun glare is so bad I have difficulty seeing my MFD's.

A: Yes, if you mean all human players. You can remove it by turning off light source shading in the Options menu.

Thanks for that one. Although I do remember you mentioning light sourcing before ....sorry about that ....

Im not sure TAW models any difference between stealthy start with smooth wings and no more externals weapons, just the hardpoint attachments after having fired externals..

Has this been tested? As in, do SAMs lock on to the plane faster/ at a greater distance?

All this time, I thought it was the same ammount of stealthynes in TAW - however in real life it makes sense the way you mentioned it.

Interesting. I'll setup a Custom Combat mission. 1 v 1 with two F22's (might be more reliable than using a SAM base).

The above testing is not conclusive. There maybe other factors that I have neglected. eg; running the test at EMCON 1 rather than EMCON 5 ..... maybe this would make a difference or maybe at high differential air speeds, etc. However until proven otherwise, I won't be to worried about those exposed rails when I run for cover in the future. ;)

EDIT: "Piloted F22 unarmed" infers "clean" external surface.

Geez, thanks for bursting my bubble. Next, I'll bet you'll tell me that the Nightstalker Black skin doesn't use a Radar Absorbent Material to further reduce my RCS. :popcornsmilie:

EDIT: You ran it at EMCON 5?

What I would do is set medium distance, select EMCON 1, and take a screenshot of the Defensive MFD in FRAPS (using the same display range for both screenshots). That will tell you what your RCS should be along with you collecting the empirical data that you have thus far.

Sorry ..... in no way was I attempting to burst anybodies bubble. And you understand that. It takes some guts to publicly expose your understanding of TAW at the forum and we appreciate you constantly doing that. When I give advice (eg: the key binding thread) I think ...... Gees I hope I'm right  or what a fool I'll look. But we'll learn nothing if we don't communicate, even when the communication is wrong. Let me publicly thank Eagle for questioning what had been said here (and he might do so again about my input) but that's what's its all about. Don't necessarily "accept", be big enough to question what is being said ................ nicely. ;)

I ran it at EMCON 5 because I thought I'd attract a bigger radar scan. Here's an example of what I saw:

rails2.jpg

EDIT: I'm confident I've setup everything correctly. (Similar with what you suggest). The empirical values have been taken from such and other screenshots. The tests IMHO, have been carried out within "best experimental practice".

But doesn't this reinforce the usefulness of stealth:

F22 with 12 x externally hung Mavericks. Radar range 38.2 miles

F22 "clean". Radar range 11.5 miles :whoa:

I'm constantly underestimating the numerical value of stealth, let alone all the other benefits.

I flew Falcon 4.0 Allied Force with Pandion last night.

Talk about bursting my bubble. IMHO,,It's the big time.

I come running back to my friend, good old TAW.

Geez, thanks, all of you, for your interest in TAW.

Too bad those other pilots using Win 7 can't fly TAW.

Just done a level 4 WW mission, where the Strike group had to takeout building at an airfield. I modified the package to have 4 x F22's Strike plus 4 x F22 Escort and me with 4 x F22 WW. The Strike group just flew away from me doing 650 knots! The Escort group got left behind at the home field and came screaming past me and caught the Strike group. They were all on there way home by the time I made IP. I think without any losses. I preceded to the field taking out the the SAMs etc together with a couple plane which had scrambled. Thought I'd make a mess of anything else I could hit when ....................... I "crashed" to the mission load screen. It showed 75% complete but no points gained or lost and showing mission failed. Checking on the other flights we had an Escort pilot bail out, the rest were fine.

My queries are:

Why did the strike group go so fast? ......... however maybe it was me that was too slow. I had 12 mavs on board plus AA ........... Maybe I've answered my own question.

The other thing, what did the game "crash" mean?

TAW works in Win 7 x86 and x64.

Someone should let the Win7 guys know how.

help-1.gif

HF,, I'll put the topic up if you will answer the "How" ??

Maybe we can attrack some of the F4 guys over to TAW.

Worry,, Me? Maybe a little, I didn't ask Home Fries,, kind-a

Ya,, & others on TS3.

Ref;

Pandion last night, Eugene, Recluse,,,

Eugene's and Recluse's issues are not Win7 related, and IIRC are strictly multiplayer issues. Can't speak for Pandion.

So can we clarify the situation with Pandion? If "we" can fix Sweeper's problem we can fix anything. Sorry Sweeper. ;)

^^ You did a good job testing the RCS, I think the issue is confirmed, and the RCS in TAW is the same with clean wings compared to empty hardpoints on the wings.

I sent Wombat the following PM to explain why i suggested using a SAM as a test platform as opposed to enemy aircraft. For the discussions sake, here is the PM:

(BTW I originally sent it as an PM and not as a forum post because I didn't want to impose these thoughts on anyone, they were more of a suggestion to Wombat, who was testing the matter. He however wished I publicly post this, so here it is. ^^)

Hey Wombat, I saw you might want to test the RCS.

The reason I suggested the SAM approach, is that the SAM doesn't move at all. However the enemy plane moves around.

This makes it very easy to fly straight ahead at the same flight level and same throttle settings in two occasions:

One where you start off with empty wings and internals and fly towards the SAM.

The other where start with externals, but immediately drop them at start, so there is minimal to no difference in speed, acceleration, drag, etc.

The only difference will (ideally) be the remaining hardpoints - and this should make the test results somewhat more meaningful, since you are reducing all external factors to a minimum.

Flying against enemy planes, external factors which will influence RCS results are: -direction which you are flying -direction in which the enemy is flying -wings angle (flying level, or on a 15 degrees left turn, or 90 degrees to the side, etc) -possibly altitude difference as well.

I'm just thinking it might produce more reliable results to try testing it against SAMs which aren't moving around, and which will stay in the same position in front of you, so you don't need to maneuver either.

Thanks for your interest in the matter! :)

Cheers

Eagle

I'm still very limited in the amount of time I spend flying in TAW - The brief moments I get to post on the forums and shortly and drop by TS3 is all I can spare for another week at least.

Anyway, just thought I'd share this :)

Cheers!

Eagle
