Moxin
Gentleman, This is my first post here, and I do so with inquiries into your experience...or lack thereof if such is the case...in regards to World War 2 Online. Having browsed your site and the forums, it appears obvious you're all mature (if not in age then most certainly in attitude) gamers who appreciate a good ww2 sim. I myself am playing BiA and as of last night, SH3 and love both. WW2OL has changed drastically in the past years, even more impressive given their initial release debacle. I was curious as to whether any of you have had a chance to experience the game in its latest incarnation, and if so, what you think of it? Donster
First of all, welcome to the nut house Moxin! I for one have never tried WW2 Online, but expect to be hearing from a certain crazed Canadian aptly named Canuck!
Moxin
Look forward to it...we've got our version called Rafter. For a war simmer, it's truly the cream of the crop...and with the upcoming Beyond Blitzkrieg re-release, the game has really stepped it up several notches. Schatten
I tried it when it first came out but there were several issues with it that just rubbed me the wrong way. I may give it another twirl here after I move but for the time being I'm strapped for time as it is, plus I don't have a working ISP email at the moment so I couldn't even try out the recent free (re)-trial. Pretty vexing that is. All my time right now is spent on flying PF with the gang here and playing SH III, which I think definately is a contender for Sim of the Year and possibly even Game of the Year. So many things in SH III were done right that it keeps calling me back even when I'm all fixed on doing something else. Very Siren-esque it is. Schatten
I played Silent Service back on my old C-64 and then had Silent Hunter II for the PC, so I kinda liked them all along but they always seemed to be missing something. SH III has a few things missing but overall it's incredible man. I especially like the rumor going around that SH III is doing so well and the Dev team is so jazzed that SH IV should be out next year. Now whether or not it'll be a full bore sequel or just using the SH III engine is up in the air (and honestly given the subject matter and how good SH III is I'd be fine with it being an expansion for III) but it's going to be about the US subs in the PTO. Now that will be very cool and take me all the way back to my Silent Service days. That was a damn good game for the tech at the time and the manual is still one of the best ones I've ever seen for a sim. Silent Hunter II's manual was pretty good, SH III's...not so much. But the map they included with it makes up for it.
MrKWMonk
WW2OL continues to improve. The 2001 released product was not ready but thankfully they've survived and things are starting to come together nicely. It has some short comings and isn't as pretty as brand new games like BIA. Some in game tactics are very ahistorical also which can detract from 'playing war'. The interface is a bit clunky. Being massive multiplayer you can get some lag issues. It does have great atmosphere during a battle tho. The ground and air war are alot more developed than naval action. It's a very unforgiving environment with a steep learning curve. As a new player you will die, ALOT. Don't be discouraged, prolly best advice I can give is to be patient, when you spawn in take your time and get your situational awareness up. WW2OL tries to simulate real world so if you get shot you'll be very sore if not dead instantly. This is one of the things I really like about the game - you become super paranoid to survive and subsequently can have some really tense moments. The controls and game mechanics are pretty simple but as you're fighting other people things get alot more tricky once you get online. You'll be visable to friendlys as a new player so read the chat buffer and ask questions, most peeps will be happy to help. Practice offline for a bit to get your controls sorted and get a feel for the game - especially if you plan to fly. Obviously I could go on but bottom line for me is that the game is improving all the time, especially in the last 12 months and apart from my old WarBirds days nothing has this level of intensity of game play. It can be slow if you spawn into a lowly poplated area but in a large battle it gets really very intense. So give it a try, don't get discouraged if you get killed alot, ask for help in game and keep your head down
