Donster
No April Fool's Day joke either... Tuesday morning, city leaders invited the media to meet a device called “FIDO.” That stands for Fowl Intercept & Dispersal Officer.

Stans
The flocks threatened to create a constant clean up mess for parks workers anytime an event was scheduled. But over the winter, with the help of volunteers, parks workers plotted their revenue. Plotted their revenue? I do not think that word means what you think it means. Donster
Our city council are idiots and thieves. They built the Ampitheater in the flood zone, but haven't even started building the flood wall that is needed and required by FEMA and the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. And they named it after a rich car dealer here in town. Quaker Oats spent their own money and had their flood wall increased in height and width in less than a year after the flood. Their executives knew that they couldn't wait on the city or the Feds, it they wanted their manufacturing facility protected. The city still haven't torn down all the flooded out houses yet. Most but not all. The flood was in the summer of 2008. But they bought the hotel downtown and renovated it, even though it wasn't flooded. Oh and now they are trying to build a Casino in one of the areas that flooded out next to the river. Sold the land and are going to pay the road and infrastructure improvements for it. And the State Gaming Commission hasn't even approved the licensing of it yet. Of course the majority of the City Council members are friends of the "Investors" of the Casino. A few who have construction businesses, who you know will get the bids for some if not all the construction.
Old Guy
Come on, Don. Using "civic improvements" as a method to enrich politicians and their pals is a process with a long and honorable history. The basic idea probably dates back to ancient times. Do you thing the Tower of Babylon was built just so folks could visit Heaven? Were the pyramids intended only as tombs and places to honor the gods? Hah! Priests of various deities invented the idea and political animals of all stripes have adopted it through the ages. Naturally, those who have to cough up the tithes and taxes to pay for such "improvements" have tended to gripe a little -- or a lot. Sometimes the corrupt officials end up hanging in the public square or have their heads chopped off, but that only happens when they forget to pay enough people off. So cheer up. You're part of a venerable process of legal larceny. Just smile and ask, "What's in it for me?" OG

What bothers me is they get away with it so easily.

Donster
You have an amphitheatre! Send them in against gladiators or lions. In Cedar Rapids that would be Czechs and hogs.
mikew
I'm sure they're not proper Czechs..... I was curious to see how the Cedar Rapids Amphitheatre compared with the old amphitheatres in Rome, Delphi etc but am not hugely impressed. What I am impressed with, is how easy it is to get your name on some Cedar Rapids infrastructure in exchange for a few dollars, as in this: http://thegazette.com/2013/07/03/naming-rights-deal-creates-mcgrath-amphitheater-cedar-rapids/ Mr McGrath seems to be doing well, but I don't see 'McGrath Tesla' in the list of subsidiaries... Anyway, I reckon I could sponsor a telegraph pole, or similar, for a few cents. Where do I sign up?
Donster
The "Current McGrath" is the 60+ year old son of the man who started the Pontiac dealership 60 years or so ago. As the article says, he has a crap load of auto, motorcycle and ATV dealerships. I wanted to sponsor the Sewage Treatment Plant, but I didn't have enough money. They had already named it for Obama after his campaign visit back in August of 2008 I think it was.

Stans
Careful, anything attached to the Obama name seems to go wrong and fail, so I'd be very careful about flushing the commode.
