COMBATSIM Forum

Is it my imagination . . . .

. . . or is Combatsim dying?

Other than a few of us habitual offenders, the place seems to be falling into disuse.

I'm as guilty as anyone. I drop in, check the WW2 entry and glance at the cartoon and boob posts, then wander off.

Clearly, many of the one-time regulars have become seldom-seen Simians. By regulars I mean the dozen or so we've argued and laughed with since the early days.

Other than War Thunder, I play no sims. Some of the old hands no longer play online at all or restrict their activity to one game, as I do. A few longtime participants have simply vanished into the mists of time. Lots of others have come and gone. I remember only a few of those.

I got to thinking about this topic because I'm in the process of moving back to Montana, probably permanently. The inital reason for the move has to do with my mother's health, but we're unlikely to move again.

Due to the electronic nature of Combatsim, moving has no effect on my ability to interact here. It also puts me in a better position to visit Doug up in the Great White North. I will probably do that even if CSim slides into oblivion.

Should we recognize the inevitable, nail the windows shut, lock the doors and let the place fall into ruin? Or is there some way to revitalize portions of the entity that is Combatsim?

OG

Dream on, Joker! The day you retire you will, trust me, become the cheapest handyman and carpenter that your wife has ever found! It's a given that the word "RETIRE" becomes synonymous with "WORK HARD

Don't all laugh, but I've recently become hooked on WoT (World of Tanks) which is quite good fun. It has a fairly easy learning curve and just the thing to relax you after a hard day trying to improve

They say that "Great minds think alike!" which prompts me to say that I was thinking exactly the same yesterday, after looking at the lack of respondents to the latest posts. Personally, my advancing years and lack of neck discs, two to be precise, have slowed my activity on the PC, both on CSim and the Games I used to enjoy, but also that, except for Boob Country, I feel a lack of interest by the old-time Regulars that used to keep things active. No figures to support it, but perhaps this is a natural progression of Websites supported by the, shall we say, more intelligent and mature of the Populace, than the Teen-Meets that usually descend into name-calling and mayhem?

I'm sure Doug can enlighten us more, having his finger on the pulse of modern Technology.

:D

You want busy forums? I can tell you in about 2 minutes how we can have busy forums, but I don't think you really want that.

Better to just enjoy the solitude, pinch the nurses asses as they walk by, drink your Metamucil, and fly un-modded EAW on the Windows 98 machines with the rest of us.

Oh, and if you need more cigarettes, you'll need to speak to this lady:

See, it's getting better already!

The Forum, I mean.

The other thing............................well...........!

(Ah, yes, Nurse Ratchet, remember any like her, OG?)

I think there is more activity on the sim forums than in the ready room. Maybe we are just too scary for them? Maybe they stay away because they think we are insane (and they would be right)?

Insane? Us?

Donnie has issues with reality -- not to mention boobs. But I'm completely sane. Honest. Ask my dog.

Appearances can be deceiving though. Whizkid claims to live in Never-Never Land. Stans wanders around in a frayed British battle jacket while carrying on a rant against invading Europe in 1943. Then there's Dude, seen outside his igloo only to pee another hole in the snow.

We could clean up our act a bit, I suppose. But who has time?

Nurse. I'm hungry. Can I have some cigarettes?

I have thought the same thing and while I think it would be sad. It's inevitable. I come to read the WW2 posts and see old mates from EAW days. My current PC has no sims installed at all. I still have occasional contact with Ogdens and Coolhand and a couple of others from the old squadron. Time marches on.

There is an old gentleman whom I am privileged to call friend. He's 93 and we talked a few days ago about his memories of VE day. He was on convoy escort in the RN at the time. He had not been home in 5 years. He commented that all his war time comrades were dead and that young folks were forgetting the war. I guess we too shall "fade away" after a time.

I gave up cigarettes when they hit 85 cents a pack, but I can still pinch a nurse now and then :D

Jim, you're a wonderful son to move back to Montana and take care of your mom.

As for the forum...yes it is quieter. I wish more of our old buddies would come back. But life gets in the way I guess. Another problem is lack of PC compatible Flight Sims and Tank Sims. Most are just multiplayer now. Which I gave up on a long time ago because of all the cheating going on. Getting killed just when you spawned, etc.

I agree with Stans there is probably more activity on the game forums than the ready room. It's probably not so much the insanity issue, but they have probably figured out we are all old enough to be their grandparents. That even scares the hell out of me!

You're scared? Well maybe just a little. You bloody wanker, you're just like a little boy! No I'm not! Yes you are! Says you! You're just an Iowa boy who knows nothing but hogs and corn! Yeah, so I was borned and raised in Iowa and still live here so what? Doesn't Iowa stand for "Idiots out wandering around"? Bite me you moron! Oh, an Iowan and one of "those" eh? No I'm not! Sounds like it to me. I'm married to a woman and I like boobies! You're also insane. Says who? Says me you fruitcake. Did you know Old Guy is moving to Minnesota? That's MONTANA you idiot. Well one of those "M' states. He's going to go to Canada and visit The Dude. You mean they will let Old Guy cross the border? Yeah, they let anybody cross anymore. Can I go? Let me correct myself by saying ALMOST anybody and your on the "Do not allow to cross list. How's come? Because you're nuts. Damn, I knew that would come up and bite me in the ass. There you go, talking about ass biting again. I think I forgot to take my meds this morning. Looks that way doesn't it.

I guess I lurk more now days than anything. I just don't have that much to say. Hell I'm too busy to spend much more than a few minutes here and there just catching. Between coaching my son's football team, watching my little girl play softball, other after school events, and working a very demanding job, I have just enough time to run ArmA with Doug, Deacon and Madman. Shoot, I've got a hard drive I can't get to work that I don't have much time to fiddle with. I wish I had more time, I haven't written much of late, don't game near enough to suit me and I'm tired more often than not.

Having said all that, don't start shoveling dirt just yet. Anyone figure they got to move along, do so. Doug'll have to kick me out when it's time.

Gunny, spending time with your kids is definitely the right thing to do. They will be kids only once and they grow up so fast. Spending time with them now will make great memories for you and your kids and I know you are guiding them and molding them into responsible citizens.

Guilty as well , like Gunny I have so much to do.. average 60-70 hour work weeks and I'm tired for sure. I try to come back as much as possible, This place is like a home to me with all you old gits!

I sure do miss my long lost Son Bilko... Anyone hear from him of late? Rommel my brother from another mother I miss dearly as well... That time in Lincoln Maine when we all got together was a once and a lifetime event before our lives got too complicated! I've got 8 acres and a lots of places to stay in Maine if you ever want to see the great white north again!

Yeah, I think Donnie has the right of it -- no flight sims worth playing anymore. EAW brought us all together, after all.

That, and the Web was still pretty new, at the time. Now we're inundated with online activity. Overwhelmed, even, seeing as how much of our jobs happen online, these days.

Like Jim, I fly War Thunder once in awhile, just to keep my proficiency up.

However, like Gunny, I'm too busy with work and my kid's activities and life in general to devote much time to simming.

Tell you what, though, if a killer flight sim came along -- think the modern version of EAW -- I'll bet we'd all make time.

Until then, just hang in there. In a decade or so, we'll all start retiring. That's bound to open up our calendars. :-)

Dream on, Joker! The day you retire you will, trust me, become the cheapest handyman and carpenter that your wife has ever found! It's a given that the word "RETIRE" becomes synonymous with "WORK HARDER FOR NO PAY" than you ever did in real life! However, with careful planning you CAN turn it to your advantage, and demand, in a very low key way, that, as you've been slaving all day on Project ? the evening is yours to do with as you wish. This is when CombatSim enters the picture, and you know what that means, I'm sure! So it has its positive side, but you just have to be a little more sneaky than in years past!

Joker,

Well, it has arrived ... just get IL-2: Cliffs of Dover from Steam for less than $10, then apply the free Team Fusion mod (install guide).

Deacon, Madman, and I have been flying it and it pretty much rocks. The physics, graphics, and sound are spectacular. Truly.

Check the Death's Heads forum for some sweet track files Madman recorded of his dogfights and bomber denial missions.

Here's a short animated GIF clip (I slo-mo'd the action) from one of Madman's track files I made that illustrates just a teensy-weensy amount of the amazing in-game detail.

Note: There's a hidden scroll bar just below the bottom edge of the GIF. Scroll it to the right to see the full bailout of the German pilot.

Gunny is still working on getting his rig up-to-snuff to run the game, but once that's done, you'll pretty much be ordered to show up on the ol' flight line :)

As for the rest of you Simians, come join us in some eyeball-to-eyeball propeller-driven aerial mayhem! We don't have a regular weekly schedule for flying just yet, but if enough of you are interested, we'll definitely try to set up something that works for everybody.

I already own the game and have played it off line a bit. Steep learning curve. I already have the hardware to run it, so that's not a problem. After I finish the move to Montana I'll install it again and see what I can do.

C'mon, Stans. Break loose from some of your cash. I bought a Cyberpowerpc rig last year for under $900. It runs WT and CoD very well.

Learning curve? Setup of keys took about 20 minutes, and then I was flying and fighting just like in IL-2 Mk 1 Mod 0.

You don't have to use the uber-complex engine management, so it's all good :)
