I was watching a downloaded movie made with M$ Flight Sim 2004, featuring the B-25 Mitchell. I put on my headphones and maxed out the volume. My ears are ringing!!! But it sounded like I was really in a B-25, down to the backfiring cylinders. Help me, I'm considering buying the latest incarnation of FS so I can sim-fly these beautiful aircraft and enjoy the sampled sounds that are one of the best features of the M$ flight sim line.

Stans, Flight sim 2004 is pretty cool for training yourself. In some areas it exceeds Pacific Fighters, but in others PF has it for realism. There are some really good models out there and some of them have some really great sounds. I bought it and got some terrain updates and I do like it. Why CFS3 was so bad I do not know. But consider this: You can't kill anything and the crashes are very sterile ever since 9-11, no effects whatsoever, in fact the plane just sticks in the air and hovers right before you hit something. You should not be crashing a civilian sim anyway so I can overlook that but it is a bit silly. The dynamic weather is very cool. The ability to add terrain packs to it is very cool too.

The lack of machine guns and bombs has kept me from the FS family. CFS2 was pretty good, but FS looks better. I have heard soooo many horror stories about CFS3 that I cringe at the thought of making a go of that stink pile. Playing that movie, seeing the wonderful scenery, the wonderful aircraft model, nicely done cockpit and the unmistakable sound of those radial engines...... uh...... excuse me for a moment.

That's better. Anyway, if IL2-AEP-PF had those great sounds I think I would be satisfied, but the engine sounds are just terrible. I don't understand why Oleg hard coded the sounds to be played from a cheap Casio keyboard synthesizer.

I have CFS3. You need a HOT machine to run it well ( I have a 3.2ghz and still don't get great frame rates near the ground) . The stock FMs are BAD. But if you don't mind tweaking , you can download some great planes with excellent FMS from the AvHistory group. Their 1% plane models and FM are just as good ( and in some ways superior ) to IL-2/FB/PF. The sky and clouds are superior but the terrain is AWFUL. There are lots of ground objects but the maps are not accurate at all ( there are huge pine trees growing all over London )

The stock campigns have strange features in them as well, with the germans invading England at the drop of a hat and endless supplies of German cruisers and battleships in the channel. If you elect to play a ground attack campaign ( at highest difficulty settings) you may never see any sign of the Luftwaffe. You will just do endless unopposed bombing missions.

The biggest downside of the game to me is the stupid way multiplayer is done. You must connect through the game and Microsoft. There is no decent mission builder. AND because you can tweak stuff in the game you get the same compatability issues that we used to have in EAW.

It could have been a GREAT game. It has all of Europe, lots of ships, planes, tanks jeeps, trucks etc, big complex airfields etc ( and the Mosquito and Typhoon !) but it just does not come together.

If I posted this "elsewhere" there would now be a huge flame war :)

No, I was not thinking about getting CFS3, just M$ Flight Sim 2004, the tame, civilian stuff. Toooooo many horror stories about CFS3 for me to even think about that stinker. I don't have a current civilian flight sim, not that I really enjoy just going from point A to Point B without shooting or bombing something along the way.
