ummm yeah ummm this shows how long ive been out of the combat flight sim world, well maybe just the jet side atleast but the last known Falcon for me was 3.0 and that one drove me crazy. At the time my system couldnt handle it and you know jet sims with all the fancy doodads, just confuse the heck outta me .. give me good ole stick and rudder and guns and a working MKI eyeball im good to go .. but now im seeing Falcon 4.0 whats this!! a new improved falcon?!?! now is this an add on or a totally different flight sim altogether?!? I thought microprose went out of business and the whole falcon thingmie was dead vaporware etc... I just want to know if ive got to spend hours on end downloading patch after patch or can i just go to amazon and dig through their bins and find Falcon 4.0 ... inquiring minds want to know .. besides i need something to fill in all those fangled buttons on my saitek .. LOL :DB)

Hi Cfran

You're right about Microprose, they shuffled off this mortal coil a few years back as far as I know.

I've been a long time "Falcon" fan and like you I find Jet Sims a bit much to contend with. Faced with "Falcon 4's" manual I was frankly no better off than a Llama with a Rubik's Cube. (And I'm not talkin a trained Llama either!)

But despite this I'm still drawn to F4 like a moth to flame and reinstall it a couple of times a year, usually after watching "Top Gun."

Last time around I had read in "PC Gamer" an artical about the "Free Falcon" group. A gathering of highly talented modders who continued to tinker with Falcons code after Microproses sad demise and had made the still evolving results avaliable as a free patch for the game.

I decided that it was well worth a look and I'm glad I did because they have managed to do fantastic things with the engine. I would have been content with the fantastic graphical upgrade, but oh no, the Free Falcon team did not stop there.

They decided to tweak the whole thing to make it more faithful to real life and this extreme realism made the manual I had pretty much redundant. Yes in the height of cruelty, they came to see my Llama, and that little guy from "Good Fellas" stabbed him in the eyes with a fountain pen! "See how you get on with Rubik now!" they chortled as they left.

In fairness you can of course find all the info you could ever need through their website, but for this Badger at least that all becomes too much like work when my mission is to play.

"F4" is supposed to be hard to find these days I heard. But if you managed to dig it up somewhere I would heartily recomend a visit to "Free Falcon" if only to see what they've done with the graphics and spend a while "Oooooh Ahhhhh'ing" at the flyby view.

But! (and it's a big but.) I also heard that a brand spanking new Falcon is about to hit the streets! and once again I find myself sharing a kind of kinship with that moth banging his head against the lightbulb here on the ground floor of Badger Towers. I know that I won't understand it, I know that my system won't have enough muscle to run it properly........ but <sob> I know I'm gonna want it.

I agree with Stag a proper setup like HOTAS is required to map the million and one different controls to , F4 vs F4.2 the new one doesn't need the "Dance" it's install and fly so if your lookin at the Falcon bug then wait for the new one and go from there , just my 2cents worth

Red

Falcon 4: Allied Force is released tommorow, it's basically what the original Microprose release of Falcon 4.0 should have been like, working multiplayer, dynamic campaign (Falcon 4.0 set the standard for this particular feature) with updated graphics (well, updated as far as the engine will allow, it does'nt give Lock On anything to worry about in that department).

You'll might be lucky and find Falcon 4.0 in a discount bin or on Ebay for a few dollars but then you're faced with a variety of choices of patches done by different patch groups that are generally incompatible with each other. You're better off picking up Falcon 4: Allied Force as I think it will go a long way in uniting the community with a common platform rather than groups of players using one patch or another. The only problem is the superb manual which accompanied the original F4 in hard copy format will only be supplied as a .pdf in the new version. It's been greatly updated apparently but weighs in at around 700 pages which is enough to give any poor home inkjet printer a cardiac arrest :D Some US players have said Kinko's (I believe the spelling is right..I'm a limey we don't have that store here) gives the best deal for printing the manual though it may well end up more expensive than the game to print :(

Falcon 4: Allied Force

Oh, you old ladies! I remember when I first found flightsims in general, and combat flightsims specifically, and you guys were my mentors, and now I read lame questions like cfran's. Oh, how the Mighty have fallen! :(

I come and post here only as a mission of mercy; it's obvious that you are all too busy playing shuffleboard to be keeping up on the state of simming today.

FYI, F4:AF is, as Revvin said, F4 as it should have been, with some extras included. I only pray that the oldtimers here (the ones that answered my newbie questions about EAW and such) will throw off the shawls one last time, and attempt this sim. Drive that wheelchair up to the computer screen, and give it one last shot.

But, whether you can summon the energy to do that or not, know that I, at least, will always revere your memories. God Bless You, Gentlemen, You Were Simmers in Your Day! I Salute You!

(You pitiful old farts!!)

:D
