The Terminator

Recommended Posts

Life imitates art.  Much of the science fiction of the 1960's tv show "Star Trek" is now a reality.  No, we don't have warp drive, but we have lasers, medical, and communications devices and technology that were the stuff of fiction in the 1960's.  Considering the "Terminator" series of films and how that work of fiction portrayed computers becoming self aware, how far are we from that actually happening?  Especially since DeepMind's super computer "AlphaZero" is quite capable of learning on its own.

The Federation in Star Trek TOS wouldn't put up with any of that. There was one episode where a computer was keeping a group of of people in an idyllic existence until Kirk came along, destroyed the computer (Vaal?) and told them they'd be better off doing human things like fighting and dying.

There's plenty of ST episodes dealing with various computer/AI scenarios and all of them pretty dystopian.
