Donster
What Red said. I tried ATi awhile back and wasn't impressed with the product or price at the time. NVidia still seems better at driver performance than ATi.
mane_raptor
Ok....2 problems with the Nvidia 6800 256mg Red..... 1) I can't put any AGp card into the MB that uses 3.3v, need something with a lower power draw. 2) the price..........$450 at Tiger Direct..........there is no amount of Honey-Do items that I did that would let me get away with that!!!!!!!!!! Remember I said CHEAP!!!!!!!!
Spectre_USA
Go with the 6600 GT, like I have for the last year. Only 128MB, but utiliuzes the latest drivers to the max, and pretty darned affordable...
Stans
Yeah, I'd say get the 6600GT or if you can, the 6800GT. I have the 6800 Ultra, got it when it was the hottest card on the market ( about 7 months ago), but since then I have seen a lot of comparison charts, some using Pacific Fighters, and the GT is almost as fast as the Ultra. Otherwise, I'd look at a 7800GT if I had the money.
mane_raptor
Stans.......... Is the 6600GT a 128 or 256 card? And what about the power limit? The MB maker is quite firm about the 3.3v thing.
Stans
I think the 6600GT is 128 MB only in the AGP format, not real sure about power requirements, but I think most require a Molex line and you need a 350 watt or better power supply. mane_raptor
No problem with the power supply, the rig has a 350. What concerns me is this from the MB manual: (Caution #2) "Do NOT use a 3.3v AGP card on the AGP slot on this motherboard! It may cause permanent damage!" When I look up the specs on these cards, very few times do I see any sign if the card is a 3.3 or lower. Is there any way of finding/figuring that out? Stans
Perhaps check with the video card manufacturer's website. I think it is an issue with the amount of power the AGP slot can provide, with old AGP cards it is not a problem, but with the last round of cards, the power requirements are higher, thus the Molex connection which I think eliminated the need for the card getting its power through the AGP slot. I could be wrong on this issue.
mane_raptor
Thanks, I've been out to the manufacturer's sites on a number of different cards, very few, if any tell you what the draw thru the AGP slot is. Maybe I'll stick with the 5200 I have now, and just get the TrackIR instead.
Stans
To be honest, AGP is dead, everything is going to PCI Express.
